The Salem Grand Turk set sail in 1780. This stein was made in 1986. Both are pieces of American history.
This is a glass beer stein with pewter lid from the Schulton Company's Old Spice "Grand Old Ships" collection — the first in a series released from 1986 to 1990. The etched glass features the Salem Grand Turk, an American 300-ton ship built for Elias Hasket Derby that served during the American Revolutionary War and became the first US ship on the China Trade. The pewter lid carries a compass rose design — and the lift mechanism is embossed "Old Spice" on one side and "W. Germany" on the other.
The base is embossed by ALWE — Geschwister Weisbender UG — an authentic German maker. One historical footnote: the "W. Germany" stamp was embossed just one year before West and East Germany reunified in 1990.
Old Spice was originally manufactured by the Schulton Company, founded in 1934 by William Lightfoot Schultz. What began as "Early American Old Spice of 1937" — actually a women's fragrance — was followed by Old Spice for men in 1938. Procter & Gamble purchased the brand in June 1990.
In excellent condition — no cracks, chips, or scratches. Pewter in excellent condition as well.
