The project is now underway and the Municipality of Milan will soon launch an international tender to entrust the architectural planning of Teatro alla Scala Citadella degli artisti , which will be based in the Rubattino area of the Lambrate dstricy, just where around 28 years the Innocenti factories stopped producing its products and its engines.
Intention is to make a temple of Italian culture out of the former Innocenti buidings. The new Cittadella will host the Scala theater laboratories , now located in via Tortona ,the previous Ansaldo area, whith an occupation of up to 27 thousand square meters out of the 98 thousand available. Another 36 thousand will be allocated to the Piermarini warehouses, while the remaining 67 thousand will be used for the tailoring and carpentry rooms, respectively for the costumes and sets of the shows. A rehearsal room will also be built and an Academy of the Theater is also under consideration.
Out of the original Iinnocenti factory structures , the former Centro Studi office building and the so-called Palazzo di Cristallo where the production used to take place, both obviously dismantled, will be preserved. The Citadella project will therefore aim to recover an area of industrial archeology, with care to an increasingly ecological transition, and to bring it closer to the community, thus operating on a social level.
Art and Culture are also protagonists of other urban planning initiatives. The Cittadella degli Artisti joins other similar operations that the Municipality of Milan defined as components of a "neighborhood metropolis strategy": the development of the Polytechnic in Bovisa, the design of the Rogoredo Conservatory and the new campus of the Brera Academy at Scalo Farini, between Isola and the Monumental Cemetery
